Biodiesel plays a role in the green transition of the transport sector.
However, not all types of biodiesel have the same climate impact.
At Daka, we produce 2nd generation biodiesel.

1st and 2nd generation

The difference between 1st and 2nd generation biodiesel lies in the raw materials.

  • 1st generation biodiesel is produced directly from crops such as rapeseed and soya, and requires agricultural land.

  • 2nd generation biodiesel does not use agricultural land, but is produced from by-products of existing production.

Land use

When 1st generation biodiesel is produced, agricultural land is used for energy crops.

Specifically, this means that land that could otherwise be used for food, feed or nature is used for fuel instead. 2nd generation biodiesel is based on by-products and does not require the cultivation of new raw materials.

In a Danish context, this is essential because agricultural land is limited while space simultaneously needs to be found for food production, climate initiatives and nature.

Framework conditions and prioritisation

Fuel suppliers are required to blend biofuels to reduce the transport sector's CO₂ emissions.

In Denmark, 1st and 2nd generation biodiesel are treated equally in regulations, even though 2nd generation biodiesel does not tie up agricultural land.

The consequence is

  • that Danish agricultural land is to some extent used for the production of energy crops.

  • that Danish-produced 2nd generation biodiesel is hardly used in Denmark.

Role in future fuels

2nd generation biodiesel is also involved in the development of new fuels.

Daka works together with TotalEnergies and SARIA, where second-generation biodiesel is further refined into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).

SAF is used in aviation to reduce CO₂ emissions, where alternatives are currently limited.

Production

Our production of 2nd generation biodiesel takes place at Daka ecoMotion in Løsning by the E45 – side by side with Daka SARVAL and our head office.
